Support Resources for Restaurant Employees After Hurricane Helene

WNC Tip It Forward: AIR and ArtsAVL teamed up with GBX Group to provide emergency relief grants to restaurant workers and artists impacted by Hurricane Helene. The grant provides $500 relief stipends to food service workers 18 years or older in the Asheville Metro Area. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis based on available funds.

The NC Restaurant & Lodging Association announced the NC Hospitality Worker Relief Fund. The NC Hospitality Workers Relief Fund is managed through the NCRLA Foundation, a 501(c)(3) that has provided over $1.5 million in financial assistance to NC restaurant and hotel employees. As WNC communities and families have been devastated by Hurricane Helene, 100% of funds donated will go directly to support NC hospitality workers impacted by the storm. Employees may apply here, please share with your team.

Unemployment Insurance: On Oct. 17, Governor Roy Cooper issued an executive order increasing the maximum weekly benefit to $600 for those who are in the impacted area. This order also extends the number of weeks people can qualify for from 12 to 26 weeks.

The Division of Employment Security estimates that it may take between two and three weeks for impacted individuals to see the impact in their weekly benefit checks. The benefits for eligible claimants will be retroactive to September 29, 2024 and adjustment payments will be issued for benefit weeks going back to that date.

Unemployment Insurance: Restaurant workers who have been laid off due to Hurricane Helene need to apply for NC unemployment. If you are eligible for “regular” state unemployment, you will exhaust those benefits before Disaster Unemployment kicks in.

If you are not eligible for regular unemployment insurance, you may be able to get disaster unemployment insurance. Click here for more info.
