Catering/Event Chef

Salary Range: $26-$28/hr

Part-time: 20+ hrs/week (evenings and weekends)

 

Red Fiddle Vittles is a catering company and local market that features high-end, gourmet food items that utilize and celebrate locally-produced ingredients. On the catering side of our business, we offer a high-end full-service event catering program, platters for pickup/delivery, and cheese & charcuterie grazing tables. On the market side, we prepare a weekly take-home dinner as well as premium freezer foods for purchase from our South Asheville storefront. This Catering/Event Chef position would support both sides of the business with primary responsibilities on the catering side and secondary responsibilities supporting the retail market side. Evenings and weekends required.

 

General Requirements:

  • Proven experience in the culinary field. Experience in high-volume,   quality-oriented catering or restaurant experience preferred.

  • Excellent volume cooking and presentation skills; knowledge of local, seasonal ingredients preferred.

  • Excellent communication (written and oral) and listening skills.

  • Ability to effectively handle many tasks at once in a fast-paced work environment

  • Thoroughness, attention to detail, and excellent organizational/time-management skills

  • Good decision-making and ability to proactively make changes as needed

  • Ability to work a flexible schedule

 

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Oversee all aspects of food preparation and production of food in commissary and off-site cooking environment; coordinate closely with FOH team to execute flawless events.

  • Responsible for coordinating and distributing any food allergy/dietary restriction information to relevant staff; maintain a meticulously organized prep area to prevent cross-contamination of potential allergens.

  • Lead the operation of a safe and sanitary kitchen environment.

  • Consistently monitor and oversee all kitchen equipment for safe operations.

  • Perform routine kitchen tasks with focus and urgency.

  • Ensure that all food and other items are stored properly and in an organized manner.

  • Willingness to work as a team and contribute to a fun and positive kitchen culture.

  • Perform other kitchen duties and cleaning tasks as assigned.

 

This is a part-time paid position averaging 20+ hours/week, with opportunities for growth and additional hours. The wage range for this position is $26-$28/hour (plus tips) depending on experience. This position includes health, dental, mental health, and employer-sponsored IRA benefits. Schedules change week to week and will primarily be evening and weekend shifts.

 

Catering/Event Chef Qualifications / Skills:

  • Thorough knowledge and understanding of health and safety rules in a kitchen

  • Knowledge of and proven ability to execute advanced cooking techniques

  • Exceptional organizational skills

  • Patience

  • Manual dexterity and advanced knife skills

  • Communication skills

  • Close attention to detail and motivation to produce high quality products and results

  • Ability to work under pressure and adapt

  • Ability to stand for an 8 hour shift (with breaks) and lift up to 40 pounds

 

Education and Experience Requirements:

  • High school diploma or equivalent is desirable

  • Training from a culinary school is a major plus

  • ServeSafe certification or willingness to become certified

  • 5+ years experience as a chef in a professional foodservice environment

  • Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation
